We teach the book of First John, verse by verse, to the newcomers of our addiction recovery program. The theme of the book is Chapter 1, vs 4 "to make our joy complete."
Joy is often confused with happiness. Happiness is based on happenstance (today we'd say circumstance).
But JOY is one of the super-natural gifts of the Spirit that is given only to the believer. Joy is trusting God in all of our circumstances. Our only sin is not trusting Him.
When we stop trusting Him, we turn to things of this world to make us happy, but often those things fall short. Drugs, sex and worldly good make us happy for a short time, but when the excitement fades, we are left feeling empty and depressed.
God fills us until we are overflowing with joy!
